In a corner of the internet, a few months, or probably a year ago, I came across this meme, “Nothing Ever Happens”. Surely, when a chiliad of reels go by your screen in an hour, it’s not uncommon to find another meme. But, this isn’t one of those random ones. It has managed capture an ethos that’s been living in all our collective sub-conscious over the course of last few years.
Every month, every week, every day, we’re bombarded with a sensation. Something new. Something phenomenal. With the rise of hyper-stimulating form of media like unlimited scrolling and short form content, this is only going to get ever more ubiquitous. To some of you, you may feel like the world’s gonna end soon. To others, you may feel like the world peace is just around the corner.
To some, you may feel like we’re gonna cure cancer next month. This feeling is strongly present in individuals scroll reddit everyday for a week or so. To some, you may feel like the AI’s gonna take all our jobs next month. Some of you may feel like the economy is gonna crash because of the AI.
But here’s a thing to remember: Nothing Ever Happens. You’ve been looking at something that’s designed by a trillion-dollar company, who hire psychological experts, to capture your attention and keep you hooked on their platform. So, it’s not uncommon for you to see things that spark a great sense of hope or a great sense of desperation, often in a cycle, you’re stuck on the platform.
When was the last time something big ever happened? Covid? Well, that was 6 years ago. I don’t remember if anything world changing happened after that. Big events are uncommon. That’s why they’re big. “If everyone is super, no one will be”. Go out. Touch grass. The world is still the way it was yesterday, and I bet it will be the same tomorrow as well.
Surely, if you’re hoping something to happen in your personal life, and things have been moving in that direction, it’ll come by someday. But, to rest your beliefs under the assumption that the world’s gonna be fundamentally different in a few days, a few weeks, or a few months is nothing more than foolishness. Don’t try to get the “fell for it again” award.
Remember. Nothing ever happens.
